Harley & Doris Poon Sports Achievement Award

The Harley & Doris Poon Sports Achievement Award recognizes students who demonstrate superior athletic achievement.

The Harley & Doris Poon Sports Achievement Award is awarded to students who have achieved superior athletic milestones in the past year and have achieved A's (80% or higher) in three of the following five subjects:

  1. English Language Arts
  2. Chinese Language Arts
  3. Mathematics
  4. Social Studies
  5. Science

and the remaining subjects must be B (65%) or higher.

The Harley & Doris Poon Sports Achievement Award is sponsored by the Harley & Doris Poon Family.

Harley and Doris Poon are long-standing members of the Chinese community, retired owners of the Waikiki Restaurant and Daily Confectionary store.

Harley is a great sports fan.  He and his sons and grandsons have held season tickets for the Edmonton Eskimos since the 1960's, and Oilers tickets since the WHA days, long before the NHL.

Harley and Doris have a large extended family including 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren (and still counting), of whom 4 are currently enrolled in the Edmonton Chinese Bilingual Program.   Education has always been important for the Poon family that so far includes 3 engineers, 2 lawyers, a doctor, and a chartered accountant.

It is a great pleasure for Harley and Doris to offer an award that recognizes academic and athletic achievement in addition to honouring the student's family support that helped him/her to reach those accomplishments.

Award availability may be subject to change.
ECBEA reserves the right to adjust the award criteria.
Decisions made by the ECBEA Judging Committee are final.
